Omani frankincense is registered internationally as a geographical indication in the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).

The Sultanate of Oman has registered Omani frankincense internationally as a geographical indication with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). The issuance of this international registration certificate is a significant achievement, reflecting the established position of this ancient product within Omani identity and in the global trade associated with heritage and authentic products.

Nasra bint Sultan Al Habsi, Director General of Trade at the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion, affirmed that this registration, the first of its kind in the Gulf region, culminates institutional efforts aimed at protecting Omani frankincense and enhancing its market value in international markets. This is achieved by linking it to its authentic geographical origin and its unique characteristics connected to its natural environment and cultural heritage, and by leveraging the Sultanate of Oman's accession to the Geneva Act of the Lisbon Agreement on Appellations of Origin and Geographical Indications, which protects appellations of origin and geographical indications internationally.

She added that the importance of this international agreement lies in the fact that it provides a unified global framework for registering and protecting products linked to their geographical origin. This ensures that protection is not confined to national borders but extends to member states within a structured international system. It also grants countries flexibility in how they implement protection within their national or regional legal systems. This makes joining the agreement a strategic step for countries that possess products with natural, historical, or cultural significance, such as Omani frankincense.

For his part, Engineer Khalid bin Hamoud Al Hinai, Director of the National Intellectual Property Office at the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion, explained that the international registration of Omani frankincense represents a registered international recognition and its inclusion in the Lisbon System of Geographical Indications. This registration, which notifies the contracting parties to the system, strengthens its international legal standing. It also reflects a significant economic shift in the management of intangible national assets. The geographical indication contributes to enhancing consumer confidence and increasing the competitiveness of Omani products that incorporate Omani frankincense. Furthermore, it enables Omani entrepreneurs and companies to benefit from the global reputation of Omani frankincense, known for its quality and unique characteristics, within the internationally recognized legal framework. It also supports sustainability efforts by encouraging adherence to sound practices in frankincense production, thus preserving the natural resource and ensuring its continued economic benefit for future generations.

The Director of the National Intellectual Property Office pointed out that international registration enhances opportunities to build a cohesive brand around Omani frankincense, thus supporting the product's competitiveness in foreign markets and increasing its accessibility to various sectors, including the perfume, health, cosmetics, and value-added heritage industries. He emphasized that registering Omani frankincense as an international geographical indication underscores the protection of national resources. It is no longer limited to preserving its cultural and historical significance, but extends to becoming a tool for enhancing the market value of Omani products and resources with unique geographical characteristics. It connects them to an international framework that guarantees their protection and preserves their distinctiveness, thereby solidifying the Sultanate of Oman's presence within the international intellectual property system. This confirms that its products are capable of transcending the realm of historical and geographical symbolism to become legally protected and sustainable economic investment, transforming unique geographical resources into a globally recognized competitive advantage.

Al-Hinai stated that Omani frankincense holds special significance because it is not merely a commercial product, but rather an integral part of Omani cultural identity. It is historically linked to the Frankincense Route and the trade and cultural exchange that has characterized the region for centuries. WIPO, in its recent reports and initiatives, has demonstrated a direct interest in empowering Omani frankincense producers through projects aimed at developing brands and marketing, increasing the product's added value, and opening wider horizons for it in international markets.

The Director of the National Intellectual Property Office emphasized that protecting geographical indications is not limited to the legal aspect of safeguarding the product from counterfeiting or illicit exploitation. Its impact extends to fostering a supportive business environment for producers of geographical indications, which positively impacts the revitalization of the local economy, empowers producing communities, diversifies income sources, and achieves sustainable economic value based on the product's unique geographical characteristics. The Ministry is working to promote the protection of geographical indications and hopes to protect more of the products that the Sultanate of Oman offers in the coming period. These include food products, handicrafts, and other items that can be protected as geographical indications, with the aim of preventing others from infringing on geographical indication rights both within and outside the Sultanate of Oman.

For her part, Badriya bint Khalfan Al Rahbi, Head of the Trademarks and Geographical Indications Department at the National Intellectual Property Office of the Ministry of Commerce, Industry, and Investment Promotion, stated that a geographical indication is defined as a sign used for products that have a specific geographical origin and whose characteristics or reputation are primarily attributed to that origin or geographical region. This sign is called a "geographical indication." Furthermore, the product's characteristics, qualities, or reputation should be primarily attributed to its place of origin. The reliance of qualitative characteristics on the geographical area of ​​production clearly demonstrates the link between the product and its original place of production. Geographical indications are commonly used for agricultural and food products, handicrafts, and industrial products.

She added that geographical indications identify a product by its origin in a specific place, while a trademark identifies a product or service by its origin in a particular company. A trademark often consists of a creative sign, while the name used as a geographical indication is dependent on the name of the geographical region.
